Solent NHS Trust celebrates Chief Nurse’s Honorary Doctorate

Jackie Munro, Chief Nurse for Solent NHS trust, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Human Sciences from Solent University, Southampton.

Jackie commenced her career in Critical Care, working across the health system in General Nursing, Primary Care, Mental Health and Community Services and now has 44 years’ experience in the NHS as a registered nurse. Her breadth of experience includes working as Chief Nurse for acute, mental health and community providers.

On being awarded the honorary doctorate, Jackie said: “ I’m both honoured and humbled to be awarded my doctorate. I am really proud to be a nurse and proud of all my colleagues in the NHS.”

Respected both on a national and international footing for developing service improvement programmes, Jackie is also acknowledged for her specific work to improve mental health provision, including with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMHE) and mental health leaders. From 2001, she spent seven years nationally and internationally, championing healthcare service redesign programme.

Jackie joined Solent NHS Trust in 2017 as Chief Nurse and has taken the Trust from strength to strength, with the latest CQC inspection awarding Solent ‘Good with Outstanding for Care’. Her focus on the communities served and is passionate about improving patients and their families experience across health and social care. She has followed the principle that developing and building the confidence of staff is the most important part of achieving excellence in care.

Talking about the choice to nominate Jackie for the Honorary Doctorate, Dr. Diana Bray, Dean of the School of Sport, Health and Social Sciences at Solent University said “Jackie’s dedication to nursing is commendable, reflected in her commitment to multiple health services over the years and tenacious

attitude to supporting others. It is this level of devotion, and Jackie’s tireless work with the Solent NHS Trust, that have led us to conclude this citation by asking for the conferment of the award of Honorary Doctor of Human Sciences.”
