Solent NHS Trust wins prized HSJ Award for Staff Engagement

Solent NHS Trust has been awarded the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) 2021 Award for Staff Engagement.

At a time when many employees in the healthcare sector, especially within the NHS, are facing increasing challenges, Solent NHS Trust stood out as an employer who genuinely listens, providing a values- based culture and ensuring a great place to work.

In being been named as the winner of the Staff Engagement Award at this year’s  national HSJ Awards, Solent has been recognised for their commitment to employee wellbeing and voice, over the last 12 months and beyond.

Solent’s nomination was multifaceted but included Staff Survey results of 66% in 2020, the highest for a trust of its type in England, along with being best in class for its Freedom to Speak Up culture and third highest nationally, ensuring patient safety.  Combined with positive Friends and Families Test results of 79.5%, where employees would recommend Solent to their loved ones for care and employment, Solent evidenced a culture of pride, care and learning.

Celebrating receiving the award, Solent CEO Sue Harriman, explained: “At the heart of our nomination was the commitment to our people and the communities they serve.  Solent has invested in its greatest asset, its people.  By living through our values, we have achieved what all NHS Trusts strive for: an engaged, motivated workforce who know they are valued and are empowered to provide the best patient care possible.  I am delighted that this long- term commitment has been recognised nationally by our peers and industry leaders.  We will continue to strive for excellence in delivering great care to our communities, which always start with caring for our people.”

With over 1000 entries across 23 categories, the awards drew attention to the “high-flyers” of healthcare excellence in both the NHS and its partners who strive to improve outcomes and services for both patients and staff alike.

HSJ Editor, Alastair McLellan, said: "We believe Solent NHS Trust really holds the value of the HSJ Awards – in terms of sharing best practice, improving employee and patient outcomes, and demonstrating innovation - at the centre of what they do.”

Solent’s culture was previously noted as part of the most recent Care Quality Commission inspection which looked at the care provided, with the CQC commenting that “The trust’s strategy, vision and values underpinned a culture which was patient-centred. The culture was very positive, open and honest, staff were listened to and heard. We found everyone we spoke with was extremely happy working at the trust.”

Solent is hoping to positively influence its reputation as a great place to work and a leading provider of great care.
