Friends and Family Test

What is the Friends and Family Test?

The NHS Friends and Family Test is a nationwide initiative to gain feedback from patients about the care and treatment they receive in hospital or in the community. Patients are asked whether they would recommend NHS services to their friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment, which is believed to be an important indicator of the quality of care they have received.

If you would like to know more about how to complete the Friends and Family Test why not watch the Video Guide which can also be viewed with British Sign Language.

The vast majority of patients we have surveyed so far have said they were “extremely likely/likely” to recommend the care given to a friend or family member. We are very pleased that these people had a good experience of our care. However, we also want to know where we have not met expectations so that we can make improvements.

The results from the Friends and Family Test are published on NHS Choices

Completing the Friends and Family Test

When you receive treatment from one of our services, you will be asked the following question:

“How likely are you to recommend this service to friends and family if they need similar care or treatment?”

You will be invited to respond to the question by choosing one of six options, ranging from "extremely likely" to "extremely unlikely". You will also have the opportunity to explain why you have given their answer.

Your answer is voluntary and anonymous, and a member of your family or a friend is welcome to answer the question if you are unable to.

You can either respond online or by completing one of our postcards which are available from our services.

The Friends and Family Test does not replace our existing feedback methods. You can still raise your concerns or tell us your compliments in the same way. If you require a response to your concerns about your current care please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison (PALS) and Complaints team on: 0800 013 2319.

If you experience any problems completing our survey or if you prefer to email a member of our team with your comments, please contact:
