Chronic fatigue service

Who are we?

We provide assessment and treatment of CFS and ME for patients aged 16 and over, who are registered with a Portsmouth City GP. Our team is made up of an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist and a psychologist, who are specialists in working with CFS/ME.

What do we offer for patients?

We support GPs and other medical professionals with the process of diagnosis of CFS. Our treatments are based on a self-management approach, focusing on building energy resources gradually as well as addressing other relevant factors such as sleep, activity patterns, stress-management and rest. We work with people at different stages of the illness, from those who are mildly or moderately affected to those who are severely affected.

Treatment is individually tailored to help each person to manage their symptoms and improve their functioning and quality of life. The approaches we use are recommended by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). We offer both individual and group treatments. The length of sessions varies from up to an hour for individual sessions to two hours for group sessions, with breaks included.

Our treatments include the following components:

About your appointment

Your first appointment with the team will be an assessment in which you will see one or two of the clinicians in the team in order for us to understand more about you. Your treatment plan will then be discussed in a team meeting and you will be contacted again after this. Appointments mainly take place at our hospital base, however occasionally we see people in their homes on a temporary basis and can also offer telephone consultations
