Children Community Asthma Nurses Southampton
We are a nurse led specialist team for children diagnosed as asthmatic. We work with GP's and the hospital respiratory team. Our aim is to raise awareness and improve the management of asthma and related respiratory disorders to help prevent and reduce hospital admissions.

Referral criteria
The service welcomes referrals from health care professionals only (via email, fax or post) for children who fit ALL three of the following:
1. Are under 16 years old
2. Are registered with a Portsmouth City GP (Solent East) or a Southampton City GP (Solent West),
3. Have a definitive diagnosis of asthma / or who are on asthma preventer treatment
To those fitting the criteria stated above, the service aims to offer support to children and their families with:
- Newly Diagnosed asthma
- Difficult asthma
- Interval symptoms despite commencing/ increasing treatment
- Poor compliance to treatment
- Repeated oral steroids
- Repeated visits to out of hours /ED
- Poor school attendance due to asthma
- Home nebuliser
Full service description
The Community Children’s Asthma Service consists of one Children’s Community Respiratory Nurse operating in Solent East (Portsmouth City) and one Children’s Community AsthmaNurse operating in Solent West (Southampton City). Both Services aim to reduce hospital attendances and admissions for children with asthma through educating and empowering children and their families in all aspects of asthma management. The Nurses work closely with GP Practices within their localities and the Respiratory Teams within Portsmouth Hospitals (Solent East) and University Hospital Southampton (Solent West).

The Asthma Service is a chronic service providing on going support and follow up for Children with a diagnosis of asthma and their families. Urgent or acute referrals are not accepted.
