Childrens Community Asthma Nurse Specialist Southampton

The Community Children’s Asthma Nurse Specialist provides short term specialist support and interventions to children and young people up to the age of 16 years old with an asthma diagnosis, or those who have suspected asthma and are taking asthma treatments.

The aim of the service is to improve the long term management of asthma in children and young people in order improve quality of life, improve asthma outcomes, subsequently helping to prevent and reduce hospital admissions.

Referral criteria

The service welcomes referrals from health care professionals only (via email or post) for children who fit ALL three of the following:

1. Are under 16 years old

2. Are registered with a Southampton City GP (Solent West)

3. Have a definitive diagnosis of asthma / or who are on asthma preventer treatment

To those fitting the criteria stated above, the service aims to offer support to children and their families with:

  • Newly diagnosed asthma where there is a clinical need for specialist support
  • Support with Pharmacological/Non-Pharmacological asthma management
  • Support around asthma education
  • Continued/frequent asthma symptoms affecting quality of life
  • Visit/Repeated visits to unscheduled care (GP/OHH/ED) due to exacerbation of asthma
  • Repeated oral steroid courses required
  • Poor school attendance due to asthma
