Full service description

The catchment area that it serves is all of Portsmouth City, which is co-terminus with the geographical area supported by Portsmouth City Council Social Services. The Older Persons mental health service in Portsmouth is part of Solent NHS Trust and as such it provides care for those patients registered within the GP practices within the trust who require specialist secondary care. It is located on the St James’ Hospital site in the Milton area of Portsmouth.

The facility caters primarily for persons over the age of 65 and all 36 single rooms  are en suite. All areas have a facility to provide single sex areas including single sex quiet areas and the unit can cater for people with physical disabilities.

Most patients with primary Alcohol and Drug problems use the inpatient facilities provided by the Substance Misuse service, frail or confused patients may use the OPMH facilities.  There are close links with the community physical and mental health services such as the Community Mental Health Teams, and  Intermediate Care team facilitating a seamless service between inpatient and outpatient care.

Mental Health promotion and care works best when statutory and voluntary services work jointly with patients and carers. The underlying philosophy of the OPMH Unit is dedicated to the implementation of best practice in joint service delivery.

Patients and carers are actively involved in planning, commenting on and monitoring service quality and delivery in the Locality generally.

The design and culture of the service strives to provide peace, tranquillity and skilled person-centred care for its patients.
