On-going Research

Health Literacy and Alcohol Risk for Young Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) require knowledge and skills to estimate the alcohol content of their drinks accurately to appreciate how many units they are drinking, and the impact on their blood glucose. This will enable them to understand the potential risks involved and personalise their self-management strategies to manage that risk. This research will provide essential information regarding knowledge accuracy of alcohol content, amount of alcohol consumed and action taken to minimise the risk amongst people with T1DM. Ultimately, the information will be used to develop best practice clinical guidelines for clinicians and young adults with T1DM to minimise the risks associated with alcohol use and promote better diabetes self-management with associated short and long-term health benefits
