We are celebrating after being named the top recruiting Care Trust in England.
Results published by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) show Solent NHS Trust, which provides community and specialist mental health services in Portsmouth, Southampton and parts of Hampshire scored highly for the fourth year running.
The Trust is committed to supporting and involving staff and patients in clinical research as it believes there is clear evidence this leads to better care.
The latest league table shows that the number of people taking part in research at Solent between April 2015 and March 2016 increased by 48% on the previous year. At the same time, the number of research studies the Trust hosted rose from 42 to 47.
Daniel Meron, Chief Medical Officer, said he is delighted to see the work of the Research and Improvement Team growing year on year.
“We are really pleased to continue increasing our research portfolio, and to offer so many patients the opportunity to get involved in clinical research.
“With flourishing programmes to support our staff to learn how to carry out research and use evidence to deliver the best care, we now have evidence to demonstrate that our research is directly improving the experience and health outcomes of our patients.”
Patients who get involved in research often benefit by having opportunities to have treatments that are otherwise unavailable to them.
The trials included the G-TOG study into the effectiveness of antibiotics in the treatment of gonorrhoea, and the PLORAS study which aimed to predict language recovery after a stroke.
The Solent Research and Improvement Team was created in 2011 with the merging of Southampton and Portsmouth City Primary Care Trusts. Since then, the team has gone from strength to strength; evolving into a team of 25, including adult mental health research nurses, sexual health research nurses, podiatrists and physiotherapists.
