Welcoming breastfeeding mums

Published: 20/06/2011

Portsmouth café managers are signing up to a scheme showing their premises welcome breastfeeding mums.

To coincide with the National Breastfeeding Week (20-24 June), Solent NHS Trust and Portsmouth City Council have been piloting the Breastfeeding Welcome Award Scheme in parts of the city to raise awareness.

The café in Debenhams (Southsea) will be one of the first recipients of the Breastfeeding Welcome Certificate tomorrow (Tuesday) 21June from 10.30am. This ceremony will be followed by a ‘Breastfeeding Picnic in the Park’ from 11.30am in Victoria Park (near The Guildhall).

To date, 13 out of 25 cafes in the Albert Road, Palmerston Road and Old Portsmouth Road area have signed up to the scheme. The others are in the process of considering their application.

Amanda Malthouse, Specialist Practitioner - Breastfeeding at Solent NHS Trust, said, “ This scheme is all about working with cafes to create a welcoming environment for breastfeeding mums and we have been delighted at the positive response to this initiative . Cafés are awarded this certificate if they can demonstrate a positive and welcoming staff attitude; policies in place to raise awareness of breastfeeding and how to manage potential complaints.”

The Breastfeeding Welcome Award Scheme is being undertaken by the Breastfeeding Support and Healthy Weight Team (Solent NHS Trust) and the Health Improvement and Development Service (Portsmouth City Council), supported by the Portsmouth Supports Breastfeeding Action Group.

“This really is a great way of ensuring mums have got a welcome venue to breastfeed in when they are out and about. We will be compiling a directory of Breastfeeding Welcome venues following this pilot with details available on local websites so mums have got that information to hand,” said Amanda.
