The Adelaide Health Centre is pleased to welcome its first dedicated bus route. Starting on Monday 28 February the Velvet Bus S2 route will now be visiting Adelaide Health Centre once an hour from 9am-4pm, Monday-Saturday. The revised route is the result of extensive partnership working between NHS Southampton City, South West Hampshire LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust), Geoffrey Osborne Ltd and Velvet Buses.

The revised route will run from Southampton City Centre to the Adelaide via Freemantle, Regents Park and Shirley. The bus, an Optare Solo, features a low-floor design which makes it accessible for passengers with restricted mobility. The bus will stop near the front entrance, making it a convenient option for visitors to the health centre.

Since the Adelaide Health Centre opened in January 2010 NHS Southampton City has been working with South West Hampshire LIFT to identify existing bus routes that could be extended to include a stop at the Adelaide. The Velvet route was an ideal match for the Adelaide as it was already stopping nearby and visited much of the health centre’s catchment area.

It is hoped that the introduction of the revised Velvet bus route will enable many more local residents to make use of the Adelaide’s wide range of services which includes a GP surgery open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week, podiatry, physiotherapy, leg ulcer care and a newly opened pharmacy.

Dr Adrian Higgins, Clinical Director for NHS Southampton City said, “NHS Southampton City and South West Hampshire LIFT have been working closely together to help improve the public transport services to Adelaide Health Centre since it opened last year. We are delighted to have secured the revised route with Velvet which will make this facility even more accessible for patients and staff.”

Judy Hillier, Director of Clinical Excellence and Delivery for Solent Healthcare who provide services at Adelaide Health Centre said, “Our patients and staff will be delighted to have a bus coming right up to our doorstep. Not only will this very welcome service improve accessibility for services provided within Adelaide Health Centre but it will also help reduce parking pressure on site. Patients, visitors and staff at Western Community Hospital will no doubt also find the bus service very useful and convenient.
