Get kissable this Valentine's Day

Southampton Quitters

Southampton residents who smoke are being urged to ‘get kissable’ this Valentine’s Day by quitting smoking with help from Southampton Quitters, the local NHS stop smoking service.

Valentine’s Day is a great time to stop smoking, by showing someone you love that you care about your own health and that of those around you. Research has shown that smoking has an impact on fertility and sexual performance. For instance, men in their 30s and 40s who smoke increase their risk of impotence by around 50 per cent and risk reducing the quality and quantity of their sperm. While women smokers are over three times more likely than non-smokers to take longer to conceive.

“Nothing beats a fresh breath kiss. Apart from getting rid of the stale smell of cigarettes on body, clothes and hair, smoker’s breath, yellow teeth and nails, stopping smoking is also one of the best ways of improving health and finances,” said Alan Elgar, Senior Smoking Cessation Advisor.

“With love in the air, we thought it would be helpful to remind people of the importance of stopping smoking and that there is a lot of free support from Southampton Quitters NHS stop smoking service. Choosing Valentine’s Day to remind people about the benefits of stopping smoking is a sensible way of encouraging anyone already thinking about it to stop smoking, you can not only impress your existing partner but also attract more prospective partners if you're single.”

It is known that many smokers make several attempts to stop often without help and make the same mistakes each time ending up lapsing and starting smoking again. This can be daunting and off putting but it doesn’t have to be like this.

Southampton Quitters can make it easier and the benefits start stacking up straight away particularly as pack-a-day smokers can save up to £45 a week which could make a lot of difference to themselves and their families – not to mention the health benefits.

To find out where Southampton Quitters advisors will be on Valentine’s Day, or to access the stop smoking service, please telephone 023 8051 5221 or text the word ‘KISSABLE’ to 88020.
