Southampton nurse gets Queen's Nurse award

Frances Allen

18 June 2010

Solent Healthcare nurse, Frances Allen, has joined an elite band of healthcare professionals carrying the title ‘Queen’s Nurse’ (QN), which she was recently conferred in recognition of her sterling work for the NHS.

Frances, who is a Locality Lead Co-ordinator for Health Visiting and School Nursing in the city, was presented with her badge and certificate by Dame Donna Kinnair, the guest of honour at The Queen’s Nursing Institute Award Ceremony 2010 in London last month. Dame Donna is a Director of Nursing and Commissioning at Southwark Primary Care Trust and was until recently a member of the Prime Minister’s Commission on the future of nursing and midwifery.

QN Frances has worked in the NHS since 1973, having started as student nurse at St George’s Hospital in London. Her roles have included General Nurse, Midwife, Health Visitor and Primary Care Nursing Team Leader (managing Health Visitors and District Nurses).

Following a grant from the QNI Fund for Innovation for her local healthy eating project called ‘Tasty Toddler Treats’ Frances was invited to apply for the QN title. Tasty Toddler Treats, which she ran with Community Health Nurses, aimed to tackle childhood obesity through the promotion of healthy eating among toddlers and their parents.

“My application was successful,” said Frances modestly. “Receiving the title means a personal recognition of the contribution that I have made to community nursing throughout my career and also recognition for the local Health Visiting and School Nursing Service. My core values include the continuous development of both practice and individuals, which includes clients and staff and the maintenance of high standards of practice.

“The award will also provide me with further opportunities to initiate and assist with local practice developments through a national and regional networking process with other QNs and the Queen’s Nursing Institute.”

Anne Davies, Head of Child and Family Health and Wellbeing at Solent Healthcare congratulated her on the award, saying “Frances has made a significant contribution to Health Visiting and School Nursing in Southampton and I was delighted to support her nomination for this award.”
