To help prevent circulatory diseases and coronary heart disease (CHD) in the City, Solent Healthcare – provider of local community healthcare - is offering more free health checks to Southampton residents aged between 40 and 75 years old.
The health MOTs are being held on weekends and some weekday evenings. Highly qualified nurses will be running these vascular screening clinics which will include:
The free health MOTs are for local people who do not already have any known long-term conditions. Any one interested in having a check should call the Bitterne NHS Walk-in Centre reception on 023 8042 6356 during the week to find out the next available appointment. Clinics will be running at the Adelaide Health Centre (Millbrook) and Bitterne Walk in Centre.
Suzanne Burnside, Senior Nurse Practitioner for Solent Healthcare, said: “Staff at the clinics are picking up conditions which could become more serious if left untreated. For example, someone came in recently for a vascular health check where we discovered that her blood pressure was high and her heart rate too fast. The patient was also overweight and when tested, had high levels of cholesterol. These factors can increase the risk of heart disease.
“The patient was surprised to find that she had so many indicators of poor vascular health and was pleased when we were able to refer her to Solent Healthcare’s Health Trainers team for advice on diet, exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. We also referred the patient to her GP for further tests and to discuss possible treatment options. I would encourage anyone who is in the age group 40 to 75 to get a free health check as lots of people who are at risk of CHD don’t even realise it.”
