Southampton’s revamped Sexual Health Services are launching next week on 1 September 2010. Offering a more accessible and convenient integrated service, the changes mean that the Contraception and Sexual Health (C&SH) service and Genito-urinary Medicine (GUM) service will be available together at four convenient, community based locations.
This will provide a more accessible and convenient service for patients says Solent Healthcare’s Sexual Health Service Manager, Barry Alborough: “Southampton’s Sexual Health Services now offer a more integrated service. People can access the whole range of sexual health services in one appointment. The changes mean that people can get free advice, information, contraception and pregnancy testing at the same time as screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as other services.”
He added: “Other benefits include four accessible locations across the city, longer opening hours, more convenient clinic times and the availability of GUM services in three additional locations in Southampton.”
The changes have been implemented with feedback from service users, says Barry: “We researched user’s needs and spoke directly to people about what they would like from their local sexual health services. We have particularly engaged with young people who are our biggest service user. People told us they would like better opening times and to be able to attend clinics in convenient community locations. They was also demand for people to be able to access both GUM and C&SH services at the same clinics. Our plans will achieve these requests.”
Stephanie Ramsey, Associate Director of Strategic Integrated Commissioning for NHS Southampton City’s, says public support for the changes has been strong: “Hundreds of local residents supported the plans in a public consultation run at the end of last year and we would like to thank everyone who gave us their views. NHS Southampton City believes the remodelled Sexual Health Services will provide a more convenient and accessible service for the people of Southampton. Work will continue to improve sexual health service across the City through a range of initiatives and this remodelled service will be particularly key in improving the health and wellbeing of people in Southampton.”
